Chania is the capital of the prefecture of Chania and is located in the north-eastern part of the county. It is a coastal city built on the ruins of ancient Cydonia. The besieged many invaders from different cultures, whose characteristics are reflected in the numerous monuments. He managed, however, through the centuries, to keep intact the local original features, despite the increase of tourism. It is considered one of the most beautiful cities of Greece and the most picturesque of Crete.
The town of Chania is a romantic place to stroll around, with its medieval architecture, elegant mansions and wonderful Venetian port, the town’s landmark. The natural park of Samaria Gorge, a major tourist attraction and refuge for the rare Cretan wild goat or kri-kri, is located in the region’s south. The White Mountains through which the Samaria, Aradena, Imbros and other gorges run, are covered by snow until May. Equally amazing are the beaches in the Chania region with Falasarna and Ballos, stealing the show, being two of the most photographed beaches in the entire Mediterranean.
