Influenced by “Kanso”, one of the 7 Japanese aesthetic principles, our original idea of Kanso Rooms was born. In our attempt to reform the old hotel that used to stand on the premises, we expressed ourselves in a plain, simple, natural manner, just as this principle symbolizes, reminding our guests, at the same time, that homely comfort, natural decoration and relaxed ambiance may also be achieved through omission of anything non-essential and unnecessary from our rooms and common spaces alike.
Our design team has achieved the transformation and will continue to do so even more, with the existing buildings and yard, creating a minimal and environmentally friendly site. While highlighting the surrounding natural landscape, we were successful in blending it harmoniously with the interior decor of our rooms and studios. This was achieved by making use of our minimum waste philosophy and by applying eco-friendly natural materials such as non-toxic paints, 100% cotton linens and herbal toiletries into our rooms’ decoration and ambiance.
Stay in nature, while being surrounded by the characteristic Mediterranean environment, so typical of Crete. Enjoy the shade of our olive trees and walk among the local tree species that can be met in our yard and around our peaceful neighborhood. Take advantage of the privacy our natural Cretan river cane fence provides, kick off your shoes, walk around our swimming pool and feel the smooth pebbles beneath your feet, before taking a dive.
All the natural materials used in our rooms and common spaces, have been collected carefully and respectfully from the Cretan landscape. Decorative stones gathered from the White Mountains of Chania beautify our paths, paved by loose thin gravel from crushed rocks while aromatic herbs and decorative plants found in the Cretan countryside aromatize the atmosphere, giving out scents that will bring memories of childhood summer vacations to our native guests’ minds, and to our foreign visitors, experiences, and sensations that will accompany them back home and will hopefully be something to look forward to until their next visit to Chania.
Get more with less in your room or studio and forget flashy, fancy and exaggerated decorations. Kanso rooms is all about simple surroundings and having what you really need, be it only a comfortable bed, a cozy chair and a practical table. It is our hope and our strong belief that through “kanso” mentality and by choosing natural furniture and minimal ornaments, we will satisfy our guests’ need for simplicity, calming visual surroundings and tranquility- much needed during their valuable time of relaxation.
Some of the old furniture and equipment we found, have been redesigned and cleverly reused, making them more functional and stylish and thus creatively including the remains of the hotel that had stood there into its evolved version. At the same time and while having our ecological footprint in mind, we stayed true to our environmentally friendly mindset by reducing our waste disposal and needless consumerism.
It Is Our Strong Belief, That Our Philosophies And State Of Mind, Can Be Found In Nature As Well And Also In Human Character. It Just Takes A Calm Mind And Cultivated Eye To Identify Them.
